About us

We are Anuschka and Wim, the founders of Boutique Hotel La Paulowna. Before this building became our hotel, we lived on Anna Paulownastraat, right across from it. We quickly grew attached to the Anna Paulownaplein: a lovely spot to unwind after a busy week, with breakfast, coffee, lunch or dinner, and friends dropping by.

After our daughter Mila was born in 2011, we discovered the Paleistuin as our favourite place to relax. The beach is within 10 minutes by tram or bus, and the centre of The Hague is close by too.

Anuschka worked for years as a fashion buyer, which took her travelling widely, including to Portugal, Turkey, Morocco, Mauritius, New York, Hong Kong, China, India and Bangladesh. Along the way, she noticed that she herself prefers staying in small-scale, personal hotels.

Wim worked as an independent interior builder, making custom furniture and kitchens with a love for natural materials.

In Bruges, Wim’s brother John runs a bed & breakfast, Huis het Schaep, and his sister Sandra has The Town House. That gave us the idea: could we start a bed & breakfast of our own?

The old office building at Anna Paulownaplein 3 had stood empty for four years and seemed like the perfect spot for a boutique hotel. Wim got to work on plans and sketches.

Sustainability matters to us. We restored furniture and accessories from Anuschka’s father, and gave items from vintage markets a second life.

After eight months of renovation, we opened our doors in May 2015.

Boutique Hotel La Paulowna is now run with great care and dedication by Concierge Company, which continues the hotel with the same personal attention for guests, complemented by smart digitalisation for an effortless stay. Wim and Anuschka have since handed over the day-to-day running of the hotel entirely and have moved into the background, but they remain immensely proud of what they built together and still hold the hotel close to their hearts.
